Heartthrob looks for breakthrough
ALOYS Chen (Chen Kun) is a born "heartthrob". The melancholy look in his eyes and his delicate features have made him a top choice to play a romantic lead.

But Chen doesn't want to stay the same. The 30-year-old actor has been trying to break into other roles.
"I've been acting for six years and have gained a lot of experience . What I want most now is to have a large step forward in acting," he said, "But it's hard to find a simple way out."  
Chen's latest work, "The Music Box" (Lifashi), will open nationwide on April 28. In the film, Chen plays a barber living in 1920s China.  
"The barber is just a small fish in a big sea. He looks tender, but he has a strong faith," said Chen, "In the beginning, I tried to act with clear passion, but the late director Chen Yifei suggested me to be more subtle."  
In "The Music Box", Chen hasn't quite accomplished his goal of getting away from romance. Most of the movie revolves around the barber's doomed love affair with a girl who was forced to marry a military official.
Chen's next film, a psychological thriller called "Door" directed by Li Shaohong, will have nothing to do with love. In it, he plays a very sensitive guy. He's also had a new hairstyle for the role.
"Instead of speaking about love or hate in a direct way as I've often done in romance stories, I have to act alone and explore different expressions to show my fear."
Acting isn't Chen's only career. His second record, "Realize It Again" (Zaiyici Shixian) will hit CD stores on May 15.  
Chen has shown an unusual modesty in describing his musical work.
"Compared with my experiences acting, I'm not a professional in singing," he said, "In acting, I know how to convey feelings. When I sing, I can feel the mood in my heart. But my throat might not listen to me, and got out of control."
